Knowing how to express appreciation in Italian is very useful if you often find yourself in social situations with Italians. Imagine, for example, that you are invited to a wedding, or you go to see your friends’ new house for the first time, or you go to celebrate your friend’s graduation. It would be kind of you if in those cases you expressed appreciation for those people’s successes.

A classic that is good for all situations in which we want to congratulate someone is Auguri! This is great for the birth of a child, a new house or car, or a new job. There is no harm in adding another phrase, for example Sono felice per te, auguri.

Congratulazioni is another very universal expression. You can specify it a little and say Congratulazioni per la tua laurea, for example. Or Congratulazioni per il traguardo raggiunto – Congratulations on your achievement.

The third way is Complimenti. Complimenti per la tua nuova macchina or Ti faccio i complimenti per il tuo nuovo lavoro. You may also say: I miei migliori complimenti per la tua laurea.

There are three main ways you can express appreciation and congratulations in Italian.
