Why is coffee in Italy so cheap

Why is coffee in Italy so good and so cheap? Many foreigners who visit Italy would like to figure out how it is possible. The question of the low price of coffee is not at all easy and trivial. There are some social or culture-related factors of coffee drinking that are listed to justify the very low price. But a real reason seems not to be as romantic as the Italians themselves, the foreign media or non-experts in the sector define it.

What is the average price of a cup of coffee in Italy?

I did some research about the price of a cup of coffee in the world. In the United States, a cup of coffee costs on average $2,70, in Switzerland CHF4, in the UK £2,50, while in Italy it costs only €0.80.

Three reasons of a low price of coffee in Italy

When an Italian goes to the bar, usually in addition to coffee he also buys a croissant, cigarettes, scratch cards, and the newspaper. This could mean that bars make money on purchases of other products rather than on coffee.

A social factor, on the other hand, says that in the imagination of Italians, coffee is an inseparable part of their daily life and they would not allow for an increase in coffee prices despite the increasing costs of production and service.

Another thing is that Italians prefer 100% Robusta quality coffee which is cheaper than Arabica and choose the dark roast of the coffee. Coffee experts say that the dark roasting of the coffee hides the low quality of the beans. The roasting industries that is the factories that roast the coffee beans keep the prices low simply by choosing the lowest quality of the coffee.
