Italian linguistic heritage
You may have noticed that Italians speak differently depending on the region they come from. Sometimes only the accent or melody of the language they use differentiates them, but sometimes they resort to using the actual dialect. In Italy we have a vast linguistic heritage, in addition to the standard variety of Italian, there are regional languages, dialects, and even minority languages.
Italiano standard
Standard Italian is the language that is used throughout the Italian territory, it is the language you hear in television programs, on the radio, it is the language you read in novels and learn in the Italian course. The standard variety of Italian comes from the Florentine dialect
Italiano regionale and dialect
The difference between a regional language and a dialect is not that simple to define. In simply terms, the regional language is used in the wider geographical area, and the dialects in cities, towns and villages, and these two are quite similar.
Are the dialects still spoken in Italy
How do these languages coexist today? The dialects are still spoken but the difference with the past is that they are used together with the standard Italian. In general the dialect today is used in an intentional way, for example to joke, to emphasize one’s origin, with friends or family. The dialect is also part of the entertainment world, for example there are TV series, films or plays where some characters speak the dialect. But there are also the realities where only the dialect is spoken, as is the case of elderly people who live in small villages.
